We love a good happy hour here in Cape Town – let’s face it, who doesn’t? Luckily for us (and our guests), there’s great drinks deals available in abundance across the city.

Whether you’re looking to toast your travels with 2-4-1 cocktails or cool off with some budget beers, we’ve got you covered…

THE VILLAGE IDIOT

Where? Loop Street, CBD
Happy Hour: Saturday from 4pm – 6pm

This vibrant city centre bar is good fun anytime but gets particularly packed on a Friday and Saturday evening when the DJs make sure the dance floor is full. The decor is totally unique – think vintage trinkets, surfboards and even a stuffed ostrich! There’s pool tables to keep you busy in between rounds of drinks, a balcony which becomes a braai spot during the summer and even a gin station where you can pimp your drink with different fruits, botanicals and herbs. The Village Idiot also have other daily specials running throughout the week including Wing Wednesdays and Bottomless Bubbly on Fridays – check out their Facebook page to see the latest offers.

THE SORROWS

Earning a place as one of the coolest bars in the city is no mean feat in a place like Cape Town, but The Sorrows has pulled it off. It’s a hipster heaven minus the pretentiousness – there’s a great vibe here and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. The grand bar provides a very Instagrammable backdrop for your cocktails which are just R40 during happy hour. Unless you’re coming here for a last drink before you leave for the airport, we can’t see much to be sorrowful about.

Situated in the bohemian suburb of Observatory, Forex is a fun bar which brings together locals, expats and travellers for good times. The prices are already low, so this happy couple of hours sees cocktails and beers clocking in at around R30 – it would be rude not to, right? If you’re heading there on a Thursday, get a team together and enter their infamous beer pong tournament to be in with a chance of winning a bar tab. You can join in our games nights here at AP to get some practice in beforehand.

THE PIANO BAR

This New York inspired jazz bar is a local hotspot which strikes the right balance between sophistication and relaxation. With live music every evening, this place is buzzing seven-days-a-week with happy customers spilling out onto the wraparound veranda to take in views of the neighbourhood. The cocktail menu has a number of creative offerings but you can’t go wrong with a classic mojito (we’ve heard it’s their most popular drink!). Look out for other specials through the week too – their 2-4-1 Sunday tapas deals are a great way to round off your weekend.

RICK’S CAFE AMERICAIN
