Technology these days is incredible – there’s no denying it. From smartphone cameras to live-translation earphones, we really do live in an impressive age. But it’s also important to take a break from all things digital every once in a while. Get out from behind your desk, put down your phone and really see the world.

So, if you’re thinking of exploring Cape Town soon, here are some top tips on how to make it the trip of a lifetime as well as a well-earned digital detox…

Zone out on our beaches

Well, our first suggestion may be an obvious one. After all, there are 72 beaches in Cape Town with a staggering 307km of coastline. So many beaches, so little time right? Here are some of our favourites to get you started.

If you’re looking for some downtime away from the crowds, then you should absolutely head to Muizenberg. It’s one of South Africa’s best surf spots – perfect for catching some waves if you’re a seasoned surfer or taking a lesson if you’re a beginner. Adored by locals (including the adorable four-legged kind), it is a haven for some fresh air and gorgeous sunsets.

Camps Bay

TV buffs – have you seen the Emmy award-winning San Junipero episode of Black Mirror? If you haven’t, where have you been? For those who know (and ultimately love) the episode, did you know that Camps Bay was used as the scene of the virtual ‘perfect’ town? We promise it’s even better in person, too. Kick back and relax in this paradise with a cocktail and some delicious food, even having the chance to gaze over the glittering Atlantic Ocean.

Boulders Beach

For a truly unique site, you should head south and check out Boulders Beach. Forming part of the Table Mountain National Park, you can only imagine how impressive the views are. But the backdrop isn’t the only appeal – there are actually some friends with flippers which call the beach their home. Yep, this is the famous spot where you can get up close and personal with our cheeky African penguins. We stop off here on our popular Cape Peninsula tour.

Sweat it out on our hikes

After getting some headspace on our beaches, you might want to kick things up a notch. And we have some hikes which will do just that.

Table Mountain

The fact that our famous mountain was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World really speaks for itself. There are a number of routes which cater to all fitness levels and timescales, but however you choose to get to the top we promise it will be worth it. Make sure you pack a drink and some nibbles to enjoy at the top as you soak in the stunning, panoramic views. Bonus – you can take the cable car back down (after all, you HAVE worked hard).

Chapman’s Peak

With this trail, you benefit from one of the world’s most scenic drives on the approach. Then, it’s a relatively short two-hour hike to the top, where you will be rewarded with beautiful views out over the Atlantic Ocean and the villages of Hout Bay and Fish Hoek. These are the kind of views you can’t really get from behind a screen – you’ve gotta come and see for yourself.

Cape Point to Cape of Good Hope

As well as getting to see some of the most exquisite parts of the South African coastline, you will also be rewarded at the end of this hike by the famous Cape of Good Hope sign (which, to us, is better than a notification from Google Maps!). This sign tells you that you have reached the most southern point of the Cape Peninsula. How many people can say they’ve done that?!

Educate yourself on our tours

Whether you prefer the Big Five or a big glass of wine, South Africa is a country with lots to explore.

Just a short drive out of the city, there are plenty of wildlife reserves just calling your name. Head along and see your favourite animals in their natural habitat while one of the experienced guides teaches you all about them. Rumour has it, you take in more information when you aren’t distracted by your phone (who knew?).

Wine Tours

If your idea of relaxation involves sipping wine surrounded by sweeping vineyards, then you’re going to love our wine tours. We know a lot of great estates which can teach you all about their delicious wines, so you can go home feeling a little wiser (and a little tipsier). Bonus: there may also be cheese and chocolate involved… Don’t say we don’t spoil you!
